Signs of a water line or piping problem
The main water line runs underground from the street or your well to your house, and the pipes inside carry water to every fixture. When either starts to fail, the signs usually show up in your yard, your water bill or your water pressure first.
Older homes with galvanized pipes often see rusty water and falling pressure as the pipes corrode from the inside.
How a Drake water line repair works
Our plumbers find the leak, explain whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense, and give you a clear price before any work starts. For most water line replacements we use directional boring, running the new line underground between small access holes instead of trenching across your whole yard.
We also install and replace main shut-off valves, so you can turn off your water quickly when you need to.
Whole-house repiping
When old galvanized, copper or poly pipes are failing in more than one place, repiping the house replaces the supply lines inside your walls, floors and crawl space with new pipe. How do I know if my main water line is leaking?
Common signs are a soggy or unusually green patch in the yard, water pooling where the line runs, a water bill that jumps for no reason, and low water pressure through the whole house. With every faucet and appliance off, check your water meter: if it’s still moving, water is leaking somewhere. Call us and we’ll find where.
When should a house be repiped?
Repiping makes sense when leaks keep coming back, when old galvanized pipes have rusted inside and cut your water pressure or turned the water brown, or when an older system is failing in more than one place. Your plumber will look at the pipes and tell you whether a repair or a repipe is the better choice.
Do you have to dig up my yard to replace a water line?
Usually not the whole yard. For most water line replacements we use directional boring, which runs the new line underground between a few small access holes instead of digging a trench along its full length. We’ll explain what your job needs before work starts.
What causes low water pressure?
If it’s one faucet or shower, a clogged aerator or showerhead is the usual culprit. If it’s the whole house, it could be a failing pressure-reducing valve, a partly closed main valve, a leak in the water line, or old galvanized pipes narrowed by buildup. We can find the cause and fix it.
