If you are trying to understand how a heat pump water heater works let us explain it to you in the simplest terms.  A heat pump water heater works opposite of your air conditioner.  Your air conditioner pulls the heat out of your house and pumps it outside.  A heat pump pulls heat from the ambient air and that heat in your water.    A heat pump is many times more efficient and cost effecctive than an electric heating element or even natural gas.  If your water demand gets to be more than the heat pump can produce at that point the electric heating elements will kick in and help heat the water then shut back off.
