Over time this buildup can actually get deep enough to cover up the lower element and short it out. This also lessens the amount of hot water that is available in your tank. The Anode rod inside your water heater ought to be checked every 2-3 years as well. Over time the anode rod disintegrates and needs to be replaced. This is normal. The anode rod is inside the water heater so that the water attacks the anode rod and not the water heater tank. In summary, the anode rod helps extend the life of your water heater.
