If your water heater is making popping and banging sounds when it comes on chances are it has sediment buildup in the bottom of it. This sediment buildup can effect efficiency along with tank capacity. If the burner in the bottom has to heat through all the sediment to start heating the water then it is not doing a very good job and costing you money.
